3d Scan
introduction & how to
this video shows the process in a quick scan trough of the process
( with all of the youtube antics of course... )

you can see that once an object/ environment is scanned, we can manipulate how we look at it.
Impossible angles and perspectives become possible
Methods
1. Smartphone and App – cloud based
2. Camera and Software on PC – you are in control of producing the data
the steps to produce 3d models from image data are always the same
it is based on producing images from an object or environment from multiple angles,
rotating around it and creating images with 2/3 overlap
this is important because both the smartphone apps and PC software compare all these
images and are able to position them in a 3d space because of the overlap within the mages
the closer the overlap the more detailed the model
the more angles you cover, the more complete the 3d model
so if you take pictures from underneath and above an object
the object will be able to rotate in 3d view and show these parts
if you don't it will simply create a hole in the object
As shown in the example images
So when there are areas you can't reach with camera or phone
this will reflect in the scan
Production of 3d data
There are a couple of different ways of producing the scans depending on the Equipment available to use:

Iphone 12 Pro
This smartphone has a LIDAR sensor wich is able create 3d scans based on a mixture of
image data, and radar / sonar sensor. there are 3 apps commonly used for his phone and you can download the calculated file.
If nobody owns one, they can be rented on a monthly base from online vendors

Cloud based apps
work on both iOS and android phones
They use the smartphone camera but then upload the data to the cloud where the model is being calculated on a server. These apps are available in steps from iPhone 12 10 downwards to iPhone 6.
So anybody should be able to use them
The downside is that the upload or cloudrendor process sometimes doesn't work and you are not in control of why and how. the file once completed can be downloaded.

The Software required to calculate the 3d data from images runs on PC ( and Linux )
but needs an Nvidia Cuda enabled GPU ( graphics card )
This is the process I use
There ist free software to calculate the Data called Meshroom
( there are somme good payed alternatives on a monthly basis )

So it would be important to ask how owns what and figure out
if different teams could be build
– What phones are available
– DSLR with preferably 24 mm Lens available?
multiple cameras?
–Does anybody own a PC to work on
( 2 PC workstations would be best )
Those could also be rented of course
I can help and give more detailed instructions into all of these processes if necessary
like everything it gets a lot easier with some guidance
this is just supposed to be an introduction!

Working with 3d Data
Once the 3d data is created we can edit it and create a map with either free software like BLENDER
or a student licence ( free ) of Cinema4D
For now I won't include this process here but this ist the easy part!
